REGISTERThis book offers a critical review of the main interpretative paradigms that modern historiography has developed in relation to the Roman Republic. It is not a history of the republican phase of Ancient Rome, but rather an analysis of the most characteristic features of that historical period and the conceptual issues, including its relationship with modernity, implied by their study. The author addresses the following topics: periodisation, prevailing mindsets, politics, society, imperialist bearings, and the republican model's legacy and the evolution of its values over time.
Mario Pani teaches Roman History at the University of Bari.
