We find animals on our tables , in our homes, in biomedical research labs: they pervade every facet of our culture and daily lives. Over the last few decades our relationship with animals has been extensively re-defined. Veganism, bans on testing cosmetics on animals, and animalist movements have challenged longstanding traditions, undertaken striking actions receiving considerable media coverage, and promoted awareness-raising campaigns. These issues lie at the heart of the struggle between animalists and defenders of the status quo, but they also involve key topics in political philosophy.
