Information Technology Resources and the Study of Ancient History

In the filed of classical antiquity Internet has introduced a sort of revolution, by sparking methodological changes in historiography. As is true for all tools involving some degree of complexity, even users of the Net need a set of directions for finding their way in the labyrinth of available resources. This manual addresses the needs of readers who have little experience of new technologies and offers them a guide to safe "surfing". After introducing a few basic concepts concerning the web, including e-mail and on-line library catalogues, the text illustrates sites devoted to the ancient world, selected on the basis of their scientific reliability. The final part of the book contains an ample bibliography that can be used as a starting point for acquiring a deeper understanding of the web.

Contents: Introduction - 1. Birth and Evolution of Internet - 2. E-mail Applications - 3. Text and Image Databases - 4. Bibliographical Research - 5. Electronic Publishing - 6. Cd-Rom Databases - References Sites - Bibliography.
